Girls Night Out toasts busy women writers
How popular was Girls Night Out, the all-female book-signing event at
Emeril's Atlanta in Buckhead on Thursday night? The valets outside
were so backed up trying to park 275 cars, the young men dashing about
were politely requesting that customers self-park in a nearby garage.
Inside, authors and readers alike sipped martinis, champagne and
chardonnay in the crowded bar area as Carolyn O'Neil ("The Dish on
Eating Healthy and Being Fabulous"), Hollis Gillespie ("Bleachy-Haired
Honky [Female Canine\]"), Barbara Babbit Kaufman ("Attitude"), Patti
Callahan Henry ("Losing the Moon"), Shauna Austin Grice ("The Memories
of Sara Harvey") and Sandy Riggin ("Forbidden Memories: A Journey of
Healing") greeted fans and signed books.
We took a particular interest in Buckhead resident Sari Robins, who a
few years back traded in her career as a Delta Air Lines attorney to
pursue a passion for pulp.
Robins was at Emeril's signing her third romance novel, "One Wicked
Night" (Avon, $5.99).
"I went from arguing about the price of airplane parts to writing
about characters living in the Jane Austen time period," Robins told
Buzz, laughing. "With kids, I wanted to do something that didn't
require traveling all the time. Life is tough. I found when I got time
to read, I wanted candy."
These days, fictional folks with names like Marques, Cornelius, Lady
Langham and Dillon keep Robins busy plotting their lives. "The
characters really take control of the situation," she admitted. "I
can't make them do what they don't want to do."
With writing about heaving bosoms, flowing manes of hair and chiseled
chests, Robins' new life is, well, vastly different from the bland
covers of the legal briefs she used to peruse.
"And the cover paintings are created using real models, too!" she
added. "I have readers who only buy a particular book just because it
features one of their favorite models. Hey, if they happen to venture
inside later, that's just fine with me."
